Career roadmaps

Help Desk → Cloud Engineer

Cloud engineering is reachable from help desk, usually with a stop in systems or network work along the way, or a strong home lab. Employers want to see that you understand the fundamentals the cloud is built on, and that you can automate.

What you already bring

  • Troubleshooting under pressure
  • Identity and access basics (accounts, groups, MFA)
  • Networking fundamentals from day-to-day fixes
  • Clear communication with users and teams

Certifications that help

  • AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (to start)
  • AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Microsoft Azure Administrator
  • HashiCorp Terraform Associate

Certifications open doors; stories of using the skill get you through them. Check each vendor's site for the current exam.

Skills to build

  1. Networking for the cloud

Subnets, routing, DNS, load balancers and VPNs. Most cloud problems are network problems.

  2. One cloud platform in depth

Pick AWS or Azure and learn compute, storage, identity and networking well before adding another.

  3. Linux administration

Most cloud workloads run on Linux; be comfortable on the command line.

  4. Infrastructure as code

Terraform or CloudFormation/Bicep: building environments from code, not clicks.

  5. Scripting

Python or PowerShell to automate checks, deployments and cleanup.

  6. Security and cost basics

Least-privilege access, encryption and keeping a bill under control.

A realistic timeline

Months 0–3

Learn networking and Linux basics; build a small project in one cloud on the free tier.

Months 3–9

Earn an associate-level certification and rebuild your project with Terraform.

Months 9–18

Move into a systems, network or junior cloud role and collect real cloud stories.

Every path is different. These ranges assume steady practice alongside a full-time job.

Interview questions to practice

  • A web app in the cloud is slow for users in one region. What do you check first?
  • How would you give a new team access to cloud resources without giving them too much?
  • Walk me through how you'd deploy the same environment for dev and production.
